Your own body’s immune mechanisms protect you against disease and infection. However, if you simply come with an autoimmune disease, your defense mechanisms attacks healthy cells within your body in error. Autoimmune illnesses can impact many areas of the body.
The illnesses might also have flare-ups, once they worsen, and remissions, when signs and symptoms improve or disappear. Treatment depends upon the condition, but generally, an important goal would be to reduce inflammation. Sometimes doctors prescribe corticosteroids or any other drugs that lower your immune response.
All autoimmune illnesses are characterized by an overactive defense mechanism, which results in chronic inflammation and tissue destruction. Actually, the primary feature that differentiates one autoimmune disease from another is just the area of the body (the kind of tissue) that’s under attack through the defense mechanisms. The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is an extremely restrictive diet that removes foods regarded as gut irritants. The AIP is really a stricter form of the Paleo diet which involves the removal of grains, legumes, dairy, and junk foods. The AIP takes things one step (really a whole staircase) further, and eliminates many foods that have been proven to irritate and cause holes within the gut lining potentially. Foods eliminated around the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) Diet:
- Grains – wheat, grain, corn, yet others and pseudo grains (millet, amaranth, teff, etc.)
- Legumes – all beans including peanuts, black beans, pinto beans, hummus, etc.
- Dairy – all causes of dairy, even raw or fermented
- Seeds and nuts – all seeds and nuts including cashews, almonds, quinoa, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, seed-based spices, chocolate, coffee, etc.
- Eggs – particularly the white-colored area of the egg, containing inflammatory proteins
- Nightshades – tomato plants, taters, peppers, tomatillos, eggplants, goji berries and many spices
- Industrial seed oils – practically all liquid oils, aside from olive and avocado oils
- Junk foods – essentially something that arrives in the package
- Alcohol – it’s well-established that alcohol induces a leaky gut. - NSAIDs – Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for example Ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen, which cause holes to create within the gut and stomach linings. 
- Sugar, starches, fruits, yeasts, FODMAPs – Sweet, starchy, and yeast that contains foods can lead to imbalances within the gut micro flora (dysbiosis) by feeding unfavorable bacteria within the gut. They’re best limited or restricted especially initially around the AIP.
